Debby van Adrichem

Images that seem simple at first glance, but with a closer look are charged with deep emotion. The works of Debby van Adrichem are implicit. Not an abundance of color and detail, but rather introverted and sensitive. She unravels the appearance of a human being, ending only with lines and forms. Her works communicate, invite reflection, activate feelings that the viewer carries with them. 

From an early age, Van Adrichem has observed and questioned the people around her. Why do they do what they do? What is the influence of the environment and what is someone's true self? She turned it into an academic study and graduated as a researcher in youth culture, behavior and development. She discovered how a person can develop completely differently, depending on the people, culture and environment. While initially we are not very different from each other. The knowledge she gained from her studies fueled her habit of unraveling every person, to see who remains when you peel away all external influences and factors.

This carries over into her art. She observes, tries to discover a person's deeper emotion and translates it into an apparently simple image. Themes that her art deals with include personal quest, inner struggle and how we form an image of someone else. She developed a recognizable painting style in which she strives for a universal person, stripped of external characteristics that refer to gender, background and time-related elements. By varying materials and structures - such as textiles, old slats and sand - she continually adds new layers to her works.
